Making Weaning Easier For Mom and Baby

Pay Attention to Your Child’s Cues During Feedings

When it comes to feeding your child, whether you follow a nursing-on-demand approach or adhere to a strict schedule, it is important to be aware of your child’s cues. Typically, you can expect your child to want to nurse upon waking, before naptime, and during other regular feeding times. However, during the weaning process, it is crucial to observe how your child behaves before and during feedings.

One popular technique that many parents employ is known as “don’t offer, don’t refuse.” Essentially, this means that if your child does not actively request to be fed or seems satisfied with a brief nursing session, it may indicate that they are ready to drop that particular feeding.

Gradually Shorten Feeding Sessions

When it comes to weaning your child off a feeding session, a gradual approach can be beneficial. If your child isn’t quite ready to completely drop a feeding session, consider nursing for a shorter duration. It’s possible that your little one is seeking comfort and closeness instead of nourishment, so a short nursing session accompanied by extra cuddles and attention may suffice. This approach also allows your body to gradually decrease milk production, preventing issues like engorgement in the long run.
