MTP Joint Anatomy and Disorders

Understanding Hammer Toe

Hammer toe is a condition characterized by the bending of the toe in abnormal directions, often accompanied by intense pain. The proper alignment of ligaments, tendons, and muscles is crucial in keeping the toe straight. However, when an imbalance occurs, the toe can become misaligned and bend unnaturally. Various factors contribute to the development of hammer toe, including bunions that can disrupt the MTP joints and certain footwear shapes and sizes that exert pressure on the toe. Initially, the toe may still maintain some flexibility, but over time, it will become permanently bent. This change in shape and direction can lead to the toe rubbing against shoes, resulting in the formation of painful calluses.

Hallux Rigidus: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Hallux rigidus is a condition characterized by extreme stiffness and pain in the first MTP joint, caused by degenerative arthritis and bone spurs. Unlike a bunion, hallux rigidus does not typically involve a deformity or growth. However, it can significantly impact walking and movement, leading to pain that can even radiate up the leg and along the spine.

While some individuals may mistake hallux rigidus for a bunion, it requires different treatments. Orthotic devices can provide relief for mild cases, but those with severe rigidity often require more intensive interventions such as physical therapy and surgery.
