Nail Biting: Causes, Effects, and Treatments

Underlying Conditions

When it comes to persistent nail biting, there is often an underlying condition or disorder at play. In children, one of the most frequently associated psychiatric disorders is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In addition to ADHD, other commonly diagnosed conditions like oppositional defiant disorder and separation anxiety disorder can also contribute to nail biting habits. Interestingly, nail biting is often seen as one of the most prevalent symptoms of psychiatric problems in children who have Tourette syndrome. While rare, it is worth noting that nail biting could also be an indicator of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or major depressive disorder.

Parental Disorders and Nail-Biting in Children

Research has explored the potential connection between parental psychiatric disorders and nail-biting tendencies in children. In one study, it was discovered that approximately 57 percent of mothers and 46 percent of fathers with children who bite their nails had some form of psychiatric disorder. The most prevalent disorder among these parents was major depressive disorder.

Another study observed that nail-biting tendencies were more prevalent in children whose mothers had schizophrenia compared to those with bipolar disorder. However, children of mothers with either condition were more likely to engage in nail-biting behavior when compared to children from a control group.
