Object Permanence and Cognitive Development

Criticism of Piaget

Piaget’s work has faced criticism on various grounds. One area of concern is his lack of transparency regarding participant selection and the number of children involved in his studies. This omission raises questions about the generalizability of his findings and the representativeness of the sample used.

Another criticism directed towards Piaget’s theory is the concept of stages, which has lost popularity among researchers. This framework fails to adequately explain individual differences and behavior variations. For instance, in the ball and blanket study that examined object permanence, a child’s ability to retrieve the object may have been hindered by distractions or physical limitations, regardless of their understanding of the object’s continued existence.

Further Research

Recent studies have challenged Piaget’s belief about the development of object permanence. According to one study, infants as young as five months old already possess an understanding of object permanence. Unlike previous experiments where infants had to physically search for hidden objects, this study utilized visual tests to assess object permanence without any physical manipulation required.
