Sleep Deprivation: The Impact on Mental and Physical Health
According to a comprehensive study conducted in Europe, individuals who engage in excessive work-related rumination often suffer from sleep complaints. These individuals experience chronically poor sleep quality, leading to increased fatigue after work and decreased pleasure and well-being during working hours. It is well-established that sleep deprivation can have severe consequences on overall health, including an increased risk of developing serious illnesses such as cancer, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative conditions.
Compromised Immune System
Various external and internal elements can accumulate and create an overwhelming workload that is difficult to manage in a healthy manner. Stress, for instance, has the potential to activate the release of hormones like cortisol, which initially motivates us to take action. However, prolonged exposure to elevated cortisol levels can lead to inflammation and a decrease in the number of white blood cells responsible for defending against infections. Consequently, this elevates the susceptibility to viral infections, such as cold sores and the common cold.
