Diagnosing PANDAS: Understanding the Criteria
When it comes to diagnosing Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), the medical community faces challenges due to the limited amount of research available on the syndrome. Consequently, interpretations of the existing research can vary greatly among healthcare professionals. Complicating matters further, there are currently no tests that can definitively confirm a PANDAS diagnosis. As a result, some physicians may not view PANDAS as a formal diagnosis and instead focus on managing the associated psychiatric symptoms.
To identify potential cases of PANDAS, physicians often rely on a set of diagnostic criteria and blood tests that aim to detect any previous streptococcal infections. These criteria help guide medical professionals in evaluating symptoms and determining the likelihood of PANDAS being the underlying cause.
Other Behavioral Symptoms in Children with Tic Disorders and OCD
Aside from tics and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), children with these conditions may exhibit a range of other behavioral symptoms. Fidgeting, hyperactivity, difficulty in focusing (inattention), and separation anxiety are among the most commonly observed behaviors. Additionally, these children may experience extreme mood swings, such as unexpectedly laughing or crying at inappropriate times. Alongside these behavioral and psychiatric symptoms, there are also physical manifestations. Healthcare professionals have noted that increased urination during the day and sudden episodes of bedwetting at night are characteristic of these conditions. Furthermore, parents often report their children complaining of joint pain.
