Physical and Mental Effects of Sitting All Day

Increased Risk of Premature Death

Surprisingly, extensive observational data from a study involving over one million individuals has revealed a rather peculiar finding – sedentary individuals have a greater likelihood of experiencing early death. A comprehensive research conducted by the American Cancer Society, which tracked the lives of 100,000 women over several years, discovered that women who spend more than six hours per day sitting have a 37 percent higher risk of premature death compared to those who sit for fewer than three hours daily. Similarly, men who engage in prolonged sitting for more than six hours each day face an 18 percent higher chance of mortality. Interestingly, regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of premature death, even if it doesn’t fully counteract the detrimental effects of excessive sitting.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin resistance has become a focus of research among experts investigating sedentary behavior and excessive sitting. Insulin, a crucial hormone responsible for regulating various bodily functions, plays a significant role in controlling blood sugar levels. Several studies have indicated that prolonged sitting can contribute to the development of insulin resistance. Over time, this condition may progress to type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Individuals diagnosed with metabolic syndrome are particularly prone to developing type 2 diabetes.
