Pregnancy Changes You Might Not Expect

During pregnancy, a woman’s body experiences numerous transformations, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional aspects. While certain effects of pregnancy, such as a expanding abdomen, morning sickness, and cravings, are widely known, there are a multitude of peculiarities that catch some expectant mothers off guard. It is important to ensure that the “symptoms” you encounter do not indicate any complications; however, it is reassuring to know that many of these unusual changes are completely normal.

The Phenomenon of Belly Button Popping Out (Or Back In)

During the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, many expectant mothers will witness a remarkable transformation in their belly buttons, often experiencing the shift from an “innie” or flat navel to an outie. This occurrence can be attributed to the natural progression of pregnancy: as the baby grows, the increased pressure on the mother’s stomach pushes her belly button outward. Interestingly, the position of the baby can play a role in the retraction of the belly button, causing it to return to its original state and potentially fluctuating in and out throughout the course of pregnancy. Fortunately, after giving birth, the majority of women’s belly buttons revert back to their pre-pregnancy appearance.

Understanding Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a common occurrence during pregnancy, affecting not only the abdomen but also other areas such as the hips, legs, and buttocks. The hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy make the skin more vulnerable to stretch marks, while genetic factors play a role in determining their prominence and potential fading after childbirth.

While numerous creams and treatments promise to eliminate stretch marks, only a few of them deliver on their claims. It is important to remember that stretch marks are a natural part of pregnancy, and it is estimated that up to 90% of women experience them.
