Preparing Kids for Flu Shots and Other Vaccines

Comforting Objects

When it comes to a brief vaccination appointment, there is no need to pack an entire box of distracting toys. However, it can be beneficial to encourage your child to bring along their beloved stuffed animal or another comforting toy. Having this familiar object by their side can help soothe their nerves and provide a source of distraction. If the toy can even “hold their hand” during the shot or if the child can find solace in comforting their stuffed animal, this can greatly contribute to making the entire experience more manageable for everyone involved.

Striking a Balance: The Power of Less Information

Striking a delicate balance when it comes to sharing information with worried children can yield positive results. While dishonesty can erode trust and potentially lead to disruptive behavior during future medical visits, there is also no need to unnecessarily frighten a fearful toddler about the pain associated with vaccines. Instead, consider responding to their concerns by saying, “Everyone’s experience is different, so you’ll have to let me know how you feel. Personally, I felt it as a quick poke that was over before I knew it.”
