Recognizing a Covert Narcissist

Covert narcissism is a personality disorder that falls under the classification of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). This disorder is characterized by patterns of grandiosity, lack of empathy, and an insatiable need for admiration. Despite its prevalence, there is limited research available on this specific condition. It is important to note that NPD is part of a cluster of other personality disorders, including borderline, antisocial, and histrionic personality disorders. While these disorders share several common traits, it is crucial to understand that overt and covert narcissists differ significantly. However, identifying a covert narcissist can be challenging due to their elusive nature.

The Hidden Narcissist

A hidden narcissist, also known as a closet narcissist or vulnerable narcissist, is a type of covert narcissist. Unlike the stereotypical aggressive narcissist, they tend to exhibit more depressive tendencies. These individuals may appear anxious, shy, or modest, and although they frequently underestimate their own worth, they are puzzled by the lack of genuine admiration from others.

The Motivation behind Covert Narcissism

Covert narcissism is categorized as a personality disorder due to the underlying belief of those who possess it that they are inherently deserving of admiration and hold superiority over others. Despite their outwardly humble demeanor, covert narcissists lack empathy and display a constant expectation of receiving special treatment. They frequently adopt the roles of both martyr and victim, oftentimes utilizing acts of charity or feigned concern for others. However, it is important to understand that their motivations stem from a deep-seated need for recognition, pride, and power.
