Recognizing a Covert Narcissist

Behaviors of a Covert Narcissist

A covert narcissist demonstrates superior behaviors, but in a distinct manner compared to an overt narcissist. In certain social settings, they may display signs of disinterest such as rolling their eyes, sighing, yawning, and generally paying little attention to others. Furthermore, when they speak, they tend to be critical and judgmental. Due to their belief that many things are not worthy of their attention, they become poor listeners and often label subjects they find uninteresting as stupid or boring. It is important to note that their smug appearance serves as a defense mechanism to conceal their own vulnerabilities.

Building Healthy Relationships

Understanding the dynamics of relationships with others is crucial when dealing with covert narcissists. These individuals often struggle with criticism and tend to handle it poorly. One of the key characteristics of a narcissist is their belief in their own superiority and the perception of being misunderstood. When faced with negative feedback, a covert narcissist may respond by acting aloof, dismissing the criticism, or even withdrawing completely. The underlying fear of exposing their inadequacies prevents them from forming genuine connections with others.
