What is Meibum?
Sebum, when it comes into contact with the eyes, can cause irritation. However, the eyes are equipped with specialized glands called meibomian glands that secrete a substance called meibum, which serves the purpose of preventing the eyes from drying out. Meibum differs from sebum in its composition, containing a higher percentage of wax compared to lipids. Each eyelid typically contains between 20 and 40 meibomian glands.
Vitamins and Their Impact on Sebum Production
Scientists are currently engaged in discussions about the connection between diet and sebum production. However, there are some encouraging findings that indicate certain vitamins can influence the quality of sebum. Dermatologists widely recognize the benefits of Vitamin A in maintaining healthy skin and hair. In addition, Vitamin D shows promise as a potential acne deterrent. Furthermore, research suggests that sebaceous glands rely on Vitamin E to transport sebum from the bloodstream to the skin. Dermatologists are actively working to establish a stronger correlation between nutrition and sebum production.
