Serious and Not-So-Serious Causes of Goosebumps

Understanding Autonomic Dysreflexia

Autonomic dysreflexia is a condition characterized by an excessive response of the autonomic nervous system, leading to various symptoms including goosebumps. This condition can be caused by several factors such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, head trauma, spinal cord injuries, and brain bleeds. When autonomic dysreflexia occurs, individuals may experience not only goosebumps but also other symptoms like high blood pressure, excessive sweating, muscle spasms, and changes in the skin.

Postmortem Goosebumps: A Phenomenon After Death

Postmortem goosebumps, also known as death goosebumps, are a fascinating occurrence that takes place after a person passes away. When an individual dies, a depletion of adenosine triphosphate (ADT) occurs, leading to the freezing of muscles in a process called rigor mortis. Consequently, the arrector pili muscles, responsible for causing goosebumps, also go through this stiffening process. It is interesting to note that postmortem goosebumps can begin to manifest as early as two hours after death and are considered a normal part of the body’s postmortem changes.
