Serious-Sounding Medical Terms for Minor Issues

Borborygmus

Borborygmus is the scientific term used to describe the rumble, growl, or gurgle that comes from the stomach or gastrointestinal tract. In fact, when there are multiple rumbles, they are referred to as borborygmi. It’s interesting to note that a growling stomach is actually called borborygmic. The word itself, when pronounced, resembles the sound of a stomach growling. This is because its origin can be traced back to the Ancient Greek word “borboryzein,” which is believed to be onomatopoeic in nature.

Horripilation: The Goosebumps Phenomenon

When we hear the word “horripilation,” it may conjure up images of something dreadful or horrifying. However, this term actually refers to a common bodily reaction known as goosebumps. Horripilation occurs when a person experiences excitement or fear, causing their hair to stand on end. Interestingly, the words “horror” and “horripilation” share the same Latin root word, “horrēre,” which means “to be erect, bristle, or shudder.”
