Arrhythmias
Unusual as it may be, brain freeze has been found to sometimes occur alongside paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat. Researchers conducted a study on a rare case where a patient experienced both brain freeze and atrial fibrillation after consuming an ice-cold beverage. While this occurrence has been documented a few times in literature, the concept of swallowing leading to atrial fibrillation has been known since the 1930s.
Understanding Referred Pain
Referred pain is a fascinating phenomenon that some scientists believe can explain the occurrence of brain freeze. This peculiar sensation occurs when tiny muscles surrounding the blood vessels in the roof of the mouth contract and release abruptly, resulting in pain that is felt in a different area of the head.
However, brain freeze is not the only instance of referred pain in the human body. It is a relatively common occurrence, with other examples including the experience of pain in the shoulder or jaw during a heart attack, as well as pain in the shoulder blade that stems from a ruptured spleen.
