Surgical Removal of the Thyroid Gland

When the thyroid gland becomes enlarged or develops cysts, nodules, or tumors, a surgical procedure known as thyroidectomy may be advised by a medical professional. In certain cases, even non-cancerous growths can expand to a size that obstructs the throat. However, some growths can be cancerous or precancerous. In addition, individuals suffering from a goiter, an enlarged thyroid gland that hinders speech, eating, or breathing, may also be recommended for thyroid gland removal by doctors.

Pregnancy and Thyroid Hormone Levels

During pregnancy, it is crucial for women to have adequate levels of thyroid hormone to support both their own optimal metabolism and the development of their unborn babies. However, some women, particularly those already diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, may experience a decrease in thyroid hormone levels. This can lead to the manifestation of hypothyroidism symptoms in individuals who were previously at risk.

To prevent complications during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, anemia, or miscarriage, doctors may recommend thyroid hormone replacement therapies for expectant mothers. These therapies aim to ensure that the required levels of thyroid hormone are maintained throughout pregnancy, safeguarding the health of both the mother and the baby.
