Chondrocalcinosis, also referred to as calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease (CPPD), is a condition characterized by the accumulation of calcium in soft tissues. The excessive calcium deposits in these tissues, primarily in the cartilage and joints, but can also occur in other areas. The calcium forms crystals within the joints, leading to inflammation and pain in the surrounding tissues. Chondrocalcinosis is more commonly observed in older individuals, particularly senior citizens, rather than in young and healthy adults. This condition is also known as Pseudogout.
Symptoms of Chondrocalcinosis
Identifying the presence of calcium crystals in your joints can be challenging as not everyone will experience symptoms. However, these crystals can be detected through X-rays. There are various types of crystals that can develop, each with its own set of unique symptoms. According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are three main types of symptoms associated with chondrocalcinosis. It is interesting to note that despite being present in over 20 percent of individuals aged 80 years or older, most individuals do not exhibit any symptoms. Among the joints, the knee joint is the most commonly affected. Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease can manifest in different forms, such as osteoarthritis, chronic rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-like inflammatory arthritis, or pseudogout.
Common Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
People suffering from osteoarthritis often experience a range of symptoms. Osteoarthritis, a condition characterized by the gradual deterioration of joints, follows a specific pattern of degeneration. Typically, it starts with the knees, followed by the wrists, joints of the fingers, hips, shoulders, and finally the ankles. Over time, these joints gradually break down, causing discomfort and pain. In some cases, the degeneration may be more pronounced on one side of the body, leading to joint deformities. It is estimated that approximately half of those diagnosed with chondrocalcinosis will experience these symptoms of osteoarthritis.
