Esophagectomy: Surgical Removal of Esophageal Tumors
If you have a large tumor that has deeply infiltrated your esophagus, your healthcare provider may recommend an esophagectomy. This surgical procedure involves removing a section of the esophagus affected by the tumor. Additionally, during the operation, the surgeon will also remove the nearby lymph nodes and a portion of the upper stomach. The remaining part of the esophagus will then be reconnected to the stomach, allowing you to resume eating and drinking normally.
Esophagogastrectomy: A Surgical Procedure for Esophageal Cancer
Esophagogastrectomy is a surgical procedure recommended when both the esophagus and the stomach are affected by cancer. This procedure involves the removal of the affected portion of the esophagus and a larger section of the stomach. Additionally, lymph nodes are also removed during the surgery.
After the removal, the remaining part of the stomach is pulled up and reattached to what is left of the esophagus. However, in cases where there is a significant gap, the surgeon may need to utilize a segment of the colon to connect the stomach and the esophagus.
