Reproductive System Complications Caused by PID
When it comes to PID symptoms, most cases are mild and can be easily treated. However, it is important for women to understand the potential serious consequences of neglecting to seek medical attention when necessary. One such consequence is damage to the reproductive system, particularly the fallopian tubes. The scarring and inflammation caused by PID can make it more difficult for eggs to travel successfully from the ovaries to the womb. This increases the risk of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg implants and grows in the fallopian tubes instead of the womb. Shockingly, research estimates that around ten percent of women with PID may become infertile due to delayed treatment or recurrent PID infections.
Treatment for PID may require hospitalization
In certain cases, treating pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) may necessitate hospitalization. While oral antibiotics and injections are effective in the majority of PID cases, there are instances where patients with severe symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and other complications may need to receive intravenous antibiotics in a hospital setting. Additionally, to ensure the safety of both the mother and child, healthcare professionals often opt to treat pregnant women with PID in a hospital.
