Thyroiditis: Causes, Types, Symptoms, and Treatments

Exploring Different Forms of Thyroiditis

Thyroiditis can manifest in various forms, not all of which are autoimmune-related. One such form is radiation-induced thyroiditis, which occurs as a consequence of external radiation, often administered as part of cancer treatments. Another less common type is acute or suppurative thyroiditis, which arises from an infection caused by bacteria or other infectious organisms. Additionally, subacute or de Quervain’s thyroiditis can be triggered by a viral infection. It’s worth noting that certain medications have also been known to induce drug-induced thyroiditis.

Symptoms of Thyrotoxicosis

Thyrotoxicosis, also known as hyperthyroidism, can cause a range of symptoms depending on the levels of hormones and the specific condition. Some common symptoms include anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, irritability, unexpected weight loss, and palpitations. It is important to note that thyrotoxicosis and hyperthyroidism have similar symptoms because they are both caused by increased levels of thyroid hormone in the blood. However, in thyrotoxicosis, the thyroid is not truly overactive. Two specific types of thyrotoxicosis, postpartum and silent thyroiditis, typically start in the thyrotoxic phase before progressing further. It is worth mentioning that symptoms of thyrotoxicosis usually only persist for a few months.
