Symptoms of Cervical Dystonia

Antecollis

Individuals with antecollis cervical dystonia experience involuntary forward bending of the neck, causing the head to bob forward in a repetitive or random manner. Occupational therapy can be beneficial in managing this type of dystonia. While muscle retraining is not possible, occupational therapists can provide exercises and routines that may alleviate the discomfort associated with the abnormal neck and head movements.

Effects on the Entire Body

When cervical dystonia affects certain individuals, it may extend its reach to the shoulder muscles, resulting in involuntary shrugging and other abrupt movements. In rare instances, dystonia has been known to spread throughout the entire body. However, in most cases, this condition primarily impacts the muscles in the neck, with varying degrees of severity.
