Symptoms of High-Altitude Sickness

Nausea and Vomiting: Symptoms and Remedies

Experiencing dizziness, headaches, disorientation, and a lack of balance can lead individuals to feel a sensation akin to motion sickness. However, these symptoms may not be triggered by a car or plane ride. In the case of altitude sickness, vomiting caused by these symptoms can intensify dehydration, accelerating the onset of this condition. Although medication is an option to alleviate these symptoms, it is recommended to descend to a lower altitude before the situation worsens, even if only for a short period of time.

Rapid Heart Rate or Chest Tightness

When the body is exposed to rapid changes in altitude, it undergoes various adaptations to cope with the new environment. One of these adaptations is an increase in respiration and heart rate. However, individuals with heart or lung conditions are often cautioned against ascending to high altitudes or visiting high elevation destinations like ski resorts. It is also advisable for pregnant women to consult their doctors before embarking on trips to high altitudes, particularly if they have not experienced such conditions before.
