With the growing dependence on smartphones and a larger number of people working remotely, tech neck has seen a significant rise in prevalence. Despite its seemingly casual name, healthcare experts emphasize that the symptoms of tech neck can escalate into severe and chronic problems.


Symptoms of Tech Neck

Tech neck is commonly associated with various symptoms, including pain, soreness, and tension in the upper back and neck. These symptoms are often a result of prolonged and improper use of electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Individuals may also experience more localized pain that specifically affects areas like the shoulders or the trapezius muscle.

In more severe cases of tech neck, individuals may also suffer from headaches or muscle spasms. These symptoms can significantly impact one’s daily life, causing discomfort and reducing overall productivity.


Causes

Tech neck is a condition that occurs when individuals view digital devices at certain angles. The average weight of a person’s head is between 10 and 12 pounds. However, when leaning forward at approximately 60 degrees to look at devices such as phones and tablets, the neck muscles are subjected to supporting around 60 pounds of stress. This poor viewing angle is also common among computer users who look at their monitors. The constant stress placed on the neck muscles can lead to muscle soreness, inflammation, and potentially result in long-term damage and postural changes.
