Ten Types of Infectious Fungi

Mucormycetes: A Group of Fungi Living in Decaying Matter

Mucormycetes are not a specific genus of fungus but rather a diverse group of molds that thrive in decaying leaves, wood, and compost piles. Within this category, notable fungi include the Mucor species (from which the group derives its name), Rhizomucor, Apophysomyces, and Lichtheimia, among others. These molds are responsible for causing a rare yet severe infection known as mucormycosis, which can potentially affect various organs, including the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and brain.

Emergomyces

Emergomyces is a rare fungal infection in the United States that is caused by the Emergomyces species of fungi. Recently, researchers have renamed this infection and the responsible fungus based on new DNA analysis. Identifying emergomycosis infections can be challenging as they resemble other fungal infections. Typically, these cases present as small, red lesions on the skin. It is important to note that emergomycosis can be a life-threatening condition. The Emergomyces fungi can be found in soil worldwide.
