Understanding the Ear Canal
The ear canal is an essential part of the ear’s structure, working alongside the pinna to facilitate hearing. Supported by cartilage at its opening, the ear canal takes on a distinct shape resembling the letter S. Most adults have an ear canal that measures approximately three centimeters in length.
Deeper inside the head, the ear canal is reinforced by bone. This inner section of the ear canal, just like the outer part, is covered in skin and is equipped with tiny hairs that act as protective guards at the entrance. These hairs, combined with the ear canal’s secretions (known as earwax), play a crucial role in preventing airborne contaminants and other particles from entering the ear. By doing so, they help maintain the integrity of the hearing process.
Middle Ear: A Vital Link in Hearing
The middle ear serves as a crucial connection between the external and inner ear. Positioned between the ear canal and the inner ear, it is separated from the former by the tympanic membrane. Its primary function is to transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the fluid in the inner ear. This intricate process is facilitated by a series of tiny bones known as ossicles, which are supported and moved by small muscles.
