The Catatonic State: What Is Catatonia?

Diagnosis

When it comes to diagnosing catatonia, medical professionals do not have a specific test. Instead, their initial approach involves ruling out other potential conditions. Once other possibilities have been eliminated, doctors may utilize the Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS) and other complementary analytic tools to identify clusters of symptoms. In certain instances, healthcare providers might also employ the fibrin D-dimer coagulopathy test. This test is capable of detecting a protein commonly associated with blood clots, and individuals with catatonia often exhibit a higher occurrence of these clots.

Treatment

Benzodiazepines, a category of drugs, are commonly prescribed for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, and alcohol withdrawal. In most cases, benzodiazepines are effective in alleviating the catatonic state. However, if a patient does not respond positively to benzodiazepines, electroconvulsive therapy is considered as a second-line treatment option.
