Allergies and Sneezing
Sneezing is often triggered by allergic rhinitis, which includes conditions like hay fever and seasonal allergies. When an individual inhales substances they are allergic to, such as animal dander, dust, or pollen, a range of symptoms, including sneezing, can occur. The nasal mucous membranes contain allergic cells that release histamine when exposed to allergens. This histamine then interacts with the nerves in the nasal area, leading to the sneezing response.
Understanding Respiratory Tract Infections
Respiratory tract infections are common, with more than 200 cold viruses identified. It’s important to note that unlike allergies, colds are not triggered by histamine. When a person catches a cold, excess mucus production is stimulated, which in turn activates the nerves in the mucous membranes of the nose. As a result, symptoms of a respiratory infection usually manifest one at a time, with sneezing often being one of the initial signs.
