Causes of Hypervigilance
A study conducted on hypervigilance reveals that the causes of this condition are not as straightforward as previously believed. Initially, researchers assumed that several factors, such as trauma without post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), military training, and depression, could predict hypervigilance. However, the data gathered from the study suggests that only military deployment and PTSD (with either military deployment or civilian trauma) were found to be significant predictive factors.
Trauma and Hypervigilance
PTSD has long been associated with hypervigilance, making it a predictable factor for the latter. However, a recent study has revealed an unexpected finding – PTSD is the only syndrome among those examined that is linked to post-trauma hypervigilance. In other words, individuals who experience trauma without developing PTSD are unlikely to exhibit hypervigilance. This implies that the presence or severity of other symptoms is not a determining factor; anyone who experiences PTSD is likely to develop hypervigilance.
