The Danger of Crib Bumpers

Are Mesh Bumpers Safe for Cribs?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the ban on crib bumpers does not extend to non-padded mesh crib liners. However, it is important to note that the AAP does not recommend the use of these mesh liners either. Despite being made of breathable material, mesh liners can still come loose and potentially pose a risk to the baby. Additionally, there is no scientific evidence suggesting that any type of crib bumper, including mesh bumpers, effectively prevents injuries.

Why Crib Bumpers Gained Popularity

In spite of the lack of evidence supporting their use, crib bumpers have gained popularity among many parents who worry about the safety of their babies. The main concern is that without bumpers, babies might get hurt or stuck between the slats of the crib. However, the best way to address this concern is by ensuring that the crib slats are appropriately spaced. It is crucial to maintain a safe distance between the slats, with no more than 2-3/8 inches of space, to prevent the baby’s head from becoming trapped. It is worth noting that all cribs manufactured after June 2011 are required to meet this safety requirement.
