Extensive studies on animals have shed light on the potential risks associated with acrylamide, particularly its adverse effects on reproductive health and fetal development. While research on humans is limited, one study discovered a correlation between higher acrylamide consumption during pregnancy and less developed fetuses. Moreover, it has been observed that animals exposed to high doses of acrylamide may experience testicular damage and a decrease in sperm count.
Acrylamide’s Potential Neurotoxic Effects
Scientists and physicians have raised concerns about the neurotoxicity of acrylamide, despite the relatively low levels to which individuals are typically exposed. Both humans and animals have shown neurological effects in previous studies, suggesting that acrylamide may have the ability to alter neurotransmitter levels and inhibit the transmission of messages between nerve ports. It is worth noting that high exposure is not always required for these effects to occur; prolonged exposure to even low levels of acrylamide could potentially lead to peripheral neuropathy.
