Complications of Pneumonitis
Untreated pneumonitis can lead to various complications, some of which can be severe. Recurrent pneumonia is a frequent occurrence in individuals with pneumonitis. Additionally, pulmonary fibrosis, a condition characterized by the scarring of lung tissue, is also commonly observed.
In some cases, pneumonitis can cause flares, resulting in respiratory distress that may pose a life-threatening situation. Although rare, pneumothorax, a medical term for the collapse of one lung, can also occur as a complication of pneumonitis.

When pneumonitis is identified and treated by a medical professional before it progresses, the prognosis for individuals affected by this condition is generally positive. However, if pneumonitis is diagnosed at a later stage, it can potentially lead to irreversible lung disease.
