The Effects of Natural and Supplemental Collagen

Understanding External Treatments and Controversies

Exploring the efficacy of external treatments and the controversies surrounding them

Collagen-based products have gained popularity for their alleged ability to rejuvenate the skin. However, it is important to note that products requiring topical application may not yield significant results. Despite the various pathways through which topical collagen can penetrate the skin, the body absorbs only a minimal amount of this primary ingredient. Consequently, any positive effects observed from the use of topical creams or powders are more likely due to their moisturizing properties rather than their ability to deliver collagen to the skin.

The Effects of Collagen Loss

Collagen loss can occur due to various factors, not just aging. One such factor is a diet high in sugar, which accelerates a process called glycation. Glycation leads to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that can damage nearby proteins and ultimately weaken the body’s collagen. Additionally, collagen can be negatively impacted by exposure to sunlight, certain autoimmune disorders, and smoking.
