The Effects of Trauma Dumping

Is Trauma Dumping Helpful?

While expressing emotions and sharing experiences can be beneficial, trauma dumping is not an effective way to process trauma and may even have negative consequences. When individuals engage in trauma dumping, they typically do not engage in self-reflection or take responsibility for their emotions. Consequently, this approach fails to aid them in effectively processing their own emotions. Moreover, trauma dumping can also have an adverse impact on others, as it drains their energy and can potentially disrupt their relationships.

Who Are the Targets of Trauma Dumping?

Individuals who indulge in trauma dumping often unknowingly gravitate towards individuals who enable them, often finding solace in people pleasers. People pleasers, in particular, may have a fear of rejection, causing them to lend an ear to trauma dumping in an attempt to be accommodating. This response is closely tied to our freeze response, where instead of physically freezing, people pleasers freeze their own beliefs and become entirely engrossed in fulfilling the needs of the other person.
