The History, Evolution, and Benefits of T’ai Chi Ch’uan

Possible Origins

Tai chi’s exact origins are difficult for historians to determine with certainty. The early history of this martial art is mostly based on legends that originated in Taoist and Buddhist monasteries. According to some traditional schools, tai chi was created by a Taoist monk named Zhang Sanfeng in the 12th century. Zhang Sanfeng allegedly developed tai chi by combining principles from Neo-Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. However, some historians question this claim due to the limited historical evidence linking Zhang Sanfeng to tai chi. The only existing connection is a 17th-century written piece that could potentially be a political metaphor instead of a factual account of tai chi’s origins.

Origins of Tai Chi

The early history of tai chi can be traced back to the mid-19th century, when a martial artist named Yang Lu-ch’an began teaching it in Beijing. Prior to this, tai chi did not have a specific name. It was only after Yang Lu-ch’an’s demonstrations that an Imperial Court scholar observed him and wrote about the martial art, referring to it as taiji and describing it as incredibly powerful.

Before becoming a teacher, Yang Lu-ch’an himself had studied martial arts under the Chen family. It is believed that the Chen family’s martial art may be the origin of tai chi. The Chen family’s lineage can be traced back to the 17th century, further adding to the historical significance and depth of this ancient practice.
