Uveitis: Inflammation of the Eyewall
Uveitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the eyewall, also known as the uvea. This inflammation can lead to symptoms such as redness and blurred vision in one or both eyes. However, uveitis is not to be taken lightly as it can progress rapidly and even result in complete blindness.
Research has shown a strong association between smoking and uveitis. Smokers are more than twice as likely as non-smokers to develop this condition. Additionally, the risk of developing infectious uveitis, caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites, is even higher among smokers.
Miscarriage and Smoking
Statistics indicate that approximately 10 to 15 percent of pregnancies in the United States result in miscarriages during the first trimester. Smoking not only poses challenges for women trying to conceive, but it also significantly increases the risk of miscarriage during this crucial period. Studies have shown that the likelihood of experiencing a miscarriage rises by one percent for each cigarette smoked daily. Furthermore, pregnant women who do not smoke themselves but are exposed to secondhand smoke face an elevated 11 percent risk of miscarriage.
