The Importance of Breaking Bad Habits

Overcoming Nail Biting

Onychophagia, also known as nail biting, is a common habit that affects approximately twenty to thirty percent of people. Research published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment has shown that this behavior can have negative effects on both dental health and overall quality of life. Some psychologists believe that nail biting may be a neuropsychiatric condition, similar to hair pulling.

To effectively manage onychophagia, it is important to identify the triggers that lead to nail biting and find alternative behaviors to replace it. For instance, if you tend to bite your nails when feeling stressed, consider learning activities such as crocheting or playing with silly putty that can keep your hands occupied in a less harmful manner. Additionally, consulting with your dentist about an oral appliance specifically designed to discourage nail biting could be beneficial.

Effects of Screen Time on Sleep Quality

Screen time before bed can have a negative impact on our ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. The blue light emitted by electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and TVs suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that exposure to room light in the evening reduces melatonin production by 85% compared to dim light.

To improve sleep quality, experts from the Sleep to Live Institute recommend avoiding screen time at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Instead of using electronic devices, try reading a traditional book under soft, red, or amber lighting. According to research from Harvard University, reading a physical book at night promotes relaxation, while e-books may hinder restfulness. However, other studies suggest that both reading sources are equally suitable for bedtime reading.
