The Irregular Heart Rhythms of Bigeminy

Causes of Bigeminy

Bigeminy is a condition that is often difficult to determine its exact cause. However, there are several factors that can contribute to the occurrence of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), which are a common underlying cause of bigeminy. These factors can include the use of certain substances like caffeine or alcohol, as well as various cardiac issues. When PVCs disrupt the heart’s electrical impulses, it can lead to an irregular pumping rhythm, resulting in the occurrence of bigeminy. Additionally, certain risk factors such as exercise, anxiety, hypertension, and pre-existing heart disease can increase the likelihood of experiencing PVCs that can cause bigeminy.

The Bigeminy Rule: Understanding Irregular Heart Rhythms

When it comes to diagnosing bigeminy, doctors often turn to an electrocardiogram (EKG). By analyzing the pattern of heartbeats recorded during this test, physicians can identify potential causes of the irregular rhythm. Specifically, they pay close attention to the length of the P-P interval, which refers to the space between P waves or the initial waves in a standard EKG. This interval also signifies atrial contraction. In simpler terms, the occurrence and severity of bigeminy hinge on the duration between each heart contraction or full heartbeat. This fundamental principle is known as the “rule of bigeminy.”
