The Low-FODMAP Diet – A Guide to Get You Started

Vegetables and Grain Products to Avoid on a Low FODMAP Diet

When following a low FODMAP diet, there are certain vegetables and grain products that you may need to eliminate from your meals. These include foods made from wheat, rye, and barley, such as bread, pasta, and cereals. Alcoholic beverages like beer, whiskey, and other popular drinks should also be excluded due to their high fructan content.

In addition to grains, you may also have to go without garlic and onions, which are commonly used for flavoring in many dishes. Lentils and legumes, which are rich in FODMAPs, might also need to be avoided. It’s important to note that cauliflower, although it contains polyols rather than fructans, can still be problematic for some individuals following a low FODMAP diet.

Exclusions in the Low FODMAP Diet: Fruit and Animal Products

When following the low FODMAP diet, certain fruits, including popular choices like apples and pears, are typically avoided. These fruits contain high levels of fermentable carbohydrates that can cause digestive discomfort in some individuals. Additionally, people on this diet need to steer clear of all animal milk and dairy products due to lactose intolerance concerns. It is also important to note the avoidance of sugar alcohols, frequently found in sweeteners and chewing gum, as they can exacerbate symptoms related to FODMAP sensitivity.
