Understanding the Corpus Luteum and Its Role in Fertility
Within the realm of reproductive health, the corpus luteum holds significant importance during the luteal phase. Should the egg remain unfertilized or fail to implant after 14 days, the corpus luteum starts to degenerate. Consequently, the levels of progesterone and estrogen begin to decrease. This decline marks the end of the luteal phase, prompting the onset of menstruation and initiating the woman’s menstrual cycle once more.
Role of Corpus Luteum in Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the corpus luteum plays a crucial role in maintaining the pregnancy and preparing the body for the growth and development of the fetus. One of the significant effects of the corpus luteum in pregnancy is the prolongation of the luteal phase, which leads to a delayed menstrual cycle.
When fertilization occurs, the developing embryo releases a hormone called human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). This hormone acts as a signal to the corpus luteum, instructing it to continue producing progesterone. Progesterone is essential for the maintenance of the endometrial lining, which is necessary for successful implantation of the embryo.
The corpus luteum continues to secrete progesterone until around the twelfth week of pregnancy when the placenta takes over progesterone production. At this point, the corpus luteum naturally regresses, and its functions are no longer needed.
Therefore, the corpus luteum serves as a temporary endocrine gland during early pregnancy, ensuring the necessary hormonal support for the survival and development of the growing fetus until the placenta assumes this responsibility.
