The Many Causes of Encephalopathy

Understanding Hashimoto’s Encephalopathy

Hashimoto’s encephalopathy is a condition characterized by an unknown cause, although experts suspect it is linked to an autoimmune abnormality. The symptoms of this condition can vary from one individual to another, but commonly include confusion, changes in mental status, visual hallucinations, and paranoid delusions. Fortunately, there are effective treatment options available for this condition, such as cortisone or immunosuppressive therapy. With proper treatment, patients often experience resolution or improvement of symptoms within a few months of onset.

Hypertensive Encephalopathy

Hypertensive encephalopathy is an uncommon but serious condition that occurs as a result of uncontrolled primary hypertension. Individuals who are at risk of developing this type of encephalopathy often have extremely high blood pressure levels, reaching as high as 220/120. When this condition occurs, it leads to the development of cerebral edema, which manifests through various symptoms such as severe headaches, seizures, vomiting, restlessness, confusion, and problems with balance. If left untreated, hypertensive encephalopathy can progress to a state of coma. However, with prompt medical intervention aimed at lowering blood pressure, these symptoms typically resolve over time.
