Bacteria Reduction: Salt Water vs. Mouthwash
When it comes to killing bacteria in the mouth and throat, salt water may not be the most effective solution. While it does have some antibacterial properties, it is unable to eliminate all types of bacteria. In fact, a study conducted in 2010 discovered that mouthwashes containing alum were more efficient in reducing bacteria compared to salt water solutions. However, it is worth noting that these mouthwashes may not be as effective as salt water when it comes to easing pain and reducing inflammation.
Salt Water Gargles: A Potential Preventative Measure
Despite limited research, salt water gargles have been investigated for their potential benefits. A study conducted in Iran in 2010 revealed that rinsing the throat and mouth with salt water could serve as an effective preventative measure against respiratory tract infections. Nevertheless, experts emphasize the necessity for further studies with larger sample sizes to ascertain the true effectiveness of salt water gargles in preventing such infections.
