The Many Therapeutic Benefits of Angelica

Angelica, also referred to as the “angel of herbs,” has gained a legendary status due to its wide range of healing properties. This plant is found in various forms across the globe, thriving in diverse regions from Syria and Holland to the Himalayas, Iceland, Japan, China, and even New Zealand. While ongoing research continues to delve into the precise medicinal effects of angelica, current literature suggests that this remarkable plant may indeed live up to its well-deserved reputation.

Types of Angelica

Angelica is a diverse genus that comprises approximately 90 different species. However, not all of these species have been extensively studied for their medicinal properties. Among the species that have caught the attention of researchers are Angelica sinensis, Angelica archangelica, and Angelica keiskei Koidzumi. It is important to note that the medicinal properties of one variety may not be applicable to others due to the slight variations in their chemical compositions.

Angelica: A Natural Remedy for Anxiety

Angelica, a medicinal herb widely used in Indian medicine, has been found to have positive effects on mental health. Studies have shown that Angelica archangelica can be as effective as diazepam, a commonly prescribed anti-anxiety medication.

A study conducted on rats demonstrated that angelica extract was just as effective as diazepam in reducing anxiety levels. Additionally, another study revealed that extracts derived from the roots and the whole plant were more potent in reducing anxiety compared to those obtained from the leaves and fruit.

These findings suggest that angelica could be a promising natural remedy for anxiety, offering an alternative to conventional medications. Further research is warranted to fully understand its potential benefits and optimal usage.
