Managing Hypertrichosis
While there is no cure for congenital forms of hypertrichosis, there are ways to manage the condition and achieve a more typical appearance. One effective technique for removing excessive terminal hair is laser treatment. This method has shown promising results in reducing hair growth.
On the other hand, acquired hypertrichosis can be treated by addressing the underlying cause. By identifying and removing the triggering factor, it is possible to reduce the excessive hair growth associated with this condition.
Epidemiology
Hypertrichosis is a relatively uncommon condition, particularly in its congenital forms. Scientific publications have reported fewer than 100 cases of congenital generalized hypertrichosis. Congenital hypertrichosis lanuginosa is even rarer, with only approximately 50 documented cases. However, acquired hypertrichosis and hirsutism are more prevalent, with the former occurring in approximately 10% of females aged 18 to 45.
