The Most Common Causes of Coughing

Lung Infections

Lung infections can have a direct impact on the respiratory system, often resulting in a persistent cough. One of the most prevalent lung infections is pneumonia, which can be particularly severe in vulnerable populations such as infants, young children, and older adults. Pneumonia leads to the accumulation of fluid in the air sacs of the lungs, causing symptoms like fever, chills, breathing difficulties, and a productive cough.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is another common lung infection that can resemble a common cold, but it has the potential to cause a more severe illness in infants and individuals with compromised immune systems. Additional lung infections that can manifest with a cough include tuberculosis, COVID-19, and SARS.

Understanding Small-Cell Lung Cancer

Small-cell lung cancer is a less prevalent form of lung cancer, characterized by its rapid growth and aggressive spreading. Unlike other types of lung cancer, symptoms of small-cell lung cancer may not manifest until the disease has already progressed significantly. However, a persistent cough that does not improve is a common early symptom. In addition, individuals with small-cell lung cancer may experience increased pain when coughing.
