The Most Common Childhood Illnesses

What is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a skin infection that is highly contagious and primarily affects young children and infants. It is caused by Staphylococcus organisms, which result in the appearance of red sores on the face, particularly around the mouth, nose, hands, and feet. The infection spreads through direct contact with an infected person or by touching items that have been touched by an infected individual. After approximately seven days, the sores burst and form amber or honey-colored crusts. To prevent the spread of impetigo, physicians often prescribe antibiotics.
