The Mucus Plug in Pregnancy

Can Mucus Plug Impairment Contribute to Preterm Labor?

Preterm labor often occurs due to intra-amniotic infection, which is primarily caused by bacteria passing from the vagina into the uterus. A study indicates that the permeability of the mucus plug can vary based on microstructural arrangements and adhesiveness. This study further suggests that the impairment of the mucus plug may have a significant influence on the occurrence of preterm birth.

The Importance of the Mucus Plug in Labor

As labor progresses, the cervix undergoes significant changes. Effacement, the shortening and thinning of the cervix, and dilation, the opening of the cervix, occur gradually in the initial stages of labor and accelerate as active labor begins. It is during this time that the mucus plug, a protective barrier in the cervix, can become dislodged.
