The Muscles of the Leg

Medial Thigh Muscles

The muscles located in the medial region of the thigh, known as the hip adductor muscles, extend downward. These muscles include the gracilis, adductor longus, adductor brevis, and adductor magnus. There is some debate among experts regarding the inclusion of the pectineus muscle in this group. The pectineus muscle is a flat muscle that originates in the anterior portion of the hip and upper thigh, eventually merging into the medial area. Its main function is hip flexion, although it can also adduct the thigh.

Understanding the Posterior Thigh Muscles

The posterior thigh muscles play a crucial role in knee flexion and hip extension. Commonly known as the hamstrings, this group consists of three main muscles: the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus. As biarticular muscles, they cross both the hip and knee joints. During walking, the hamstrings work in opposition to the quadriceps, slowing down knee extension. In addition to these three muscles, some experts also consider a portion of the adductor magnus as part of the hamstrings.
