The Function of the External Urethral Sphincter
Although sphincters are commonly associated with the anus, it is important to note that the body possesses several other muscular rings, including the external urethral sphincter. This specific sphincter is responsible for regulating the opening and closing of the outer segment of the tube-shaped urethra. It allows us to have control over the release of urine in most instances.
Understanding the Internal Urethral Sphincter
When it comes to the anatomy of the urinary system, there is a notable distinction between the male and female urethra. Specifically, males have an additional sphincter known as the internal urethral sphincter. Situated closer to the internal organs, this sphincter is located at the junction of the urinary bladder and the urethra. Similar to the external urinary sphincter, it can be consciously controlled by individuals.
However, unlike its external counterpart which primarily regulates the flow of urine, the internal urethral sphincter serves a different purpose. During ejaculation, it contracts to prevent semen from entering the bladder. This mechanism ensures that semen is directed out of the body through the urethra, maintaining the integrity of the urinary system.
