The Science Behind Eye Color

Understanding Red or Pink Eyes

Red or pink eyes occur when the iris lacks pigment, causing the blood vessels to become visible. This condition is mainly attributed to albinism, which can affect the entire body or just the eyes in the case of ocular albinism. Individuals with albinism often experience vision issues, including poor depth perception and sensitivity to light. In fact, many people with albinism are legally blind.

Eye Color and Vision Problems

Exploring the Connection

While no definitive link has been established, there is some evidence suggesting a correlation between eye color and certain vision problems. Individuals with light-colored eyes appear to have a higher risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and uveal melanoma, a rare form of eye cancer. On the other hand, people with dark irises seem to be more susceptible to cataracts, which are the leading cause of blindness worldwide.
