The Second Trimester

Understanding Ultrasound During Pregnancy

Ultrasound examinations are a common practice conducted by doctors between 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. This non-invasive imaging process plays a crucial role in monitoring the development and positioning of the baby in the womb. By studying the anatomy, doctors can ensure the overall health of the baby. Additionally, during this ultrasound, parents may also have the opportunity to learn the sex of their baby. In situations where there is a high-risk pregnancy or suspected fetal physical anomalies, multiple ultrasounds may be required during the second trimester.

Glucose Screening during Pregnancy: Identifying Gestational Diabetes

During pregnancy, a glucose screening conducted between 24 and 28 weeks is essential to detect any signs of gestational diabetes. This condition can potentially develop in certain women during their pregnancy and, although it often resolves after childbirth, it can pose risks and health complications for the baby. The screening process involves checking the mother’s blood glucose levels one hour after consuming a sugary liquid. Women who are older or have a family history of diabetes are particularly vulnerable to developing gestational diabetes.
